“Keeping the story alive when the storytellers are no longer with us”
The Archives of the University of St. Thomas had its beginning in 1975. A committee of alumna and friends of the University, with Eileen Yeager chairing this endeavor, met twice a week for five years, working the papers of Fr. Vincent Guinan, the first president, and other documents pertaining to the story of the University.
Today, the Archive serves as the repository of those historically valuable materials which document the origins, activities and achievements of the University. Rows of gray boxes are filled with these documents from the president’s office, other administrative offices, departments, faculty, organizations; photographs; publications; scrapbooks, etc., which have been processed according to archival principles and made available for research purposes.
A collection of memorabilia can be found in the ‘Heritage Room’ located in the Archives. On display can be found such items as a Hermann Miller chair; the coffee table from the Link Lee Mansion; basketball and cheerleader sweaters; the crown and scepter of the early Mardi Gras events; a 1951 class ring, just to name a few.
On display throughout the campus are photographs that tell the story of the University. The photographic displays can be found in the following buildings: Doherty Library, Anderson Hall, Robinson Hall, Malloy Hall, Cullen Hall, Murphy Hall, Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center, Link Lee Mansion (first chapel).
The Cardinal Beran Library is a central resource for learning and research in theological scholarship for the School of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary. Serving also as a resource for the Catholic clerical, religious and lay ecclesial ministries of the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese, the library provides resources useful in enriching the academic, pastoral, spiritual and personal skills of the communities it serves.
Did Your Professor Put Something “On Reserve” For Your Class? Wondering what that means?
At the request of a professor or an administrator, we will “reserve” particular items at the circulation desk. Reserve items have short borrowing periods (usually a few hours), and high late fees ($1 per hour) to encourage their timely return. This allows a large number of patrons to borrow a single item within a brief period of time.
If your professor has put something on reserve, just ask about it at the Circulation Desk. We’ll need to know your professor’s name and the title of the item.
Note: If a reserve item leaves the circulation desk – even if you’re just taking it to the copier – it must be checked out to you. Reserve items follow the same user policies as other library items (see “Circulation Policies” and “Late Fees” for details). The only difference is that they have very short borrowing periods, and most reserves can’t leave the library.
Current UST students, staff and faculty can borrow items from Doherty Library. They must come into the library to create an account or email the library at circulation@stthom.edu to update their account for current semester before they can check out materials.
Alumni, TexShare card holders, and Friends of the Library have limited borrowing privileges.
Faculty members may authorize their staff to check out books for them. Faculty member must send an e-mail to circulation@stthom.edu stating the name, or names of the people they would like to be able to check out books for them. Individuals borrowing for faculty must present a valid photo ID card when checking out books.

Printing is available in the library for the campus community and visitors. Print jobs must be released from library computers on the first floor. Mobile printing is currently unavailable.

To conserve paper, print jobs default to duplex (front and back) unless changed to single-sided by the user.

If a printer issue occurs during your print job (ink runs out, paper jam, etc.), library staff can reprint your job at no cost.
The Doherty Family and the Doherty Library Grand Opening in 1972
Construction on Doherty Library began on December 1, 1970, completed on July 31, 1972. On November 14, 1972, UST president Father Patrick O. Braden dedicated the library in honor of Robert Peace and Ada Mary Doherty for their support of church, community, and education. Robert Doherty Jr., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Doherty, for whom the library is named after, was presented a key to the library during the dedication ceremony. The Doherty Library is centrally located on the academic mall, designed by Phillip Johnson. The Mall features the University Chapel facing the Doherty Library, an architectural representation of the harmony between Faith and Reason.

Sally S. Slick and William T. Slick, Jr. Endowed Collection in Business Ethics
In 1996, the Sally S. Slick and William T. Slick, Jr. Endowed Collection in Business Ethics was established to create a collection of material in the Doherty Library to support the Center for Business Ethics and the Cullen Trust Endowed Chair in Business Ethics at the University of St. Thomas. Books purchased by this endowment are identified by a bookplate placed on the inside cover of the volumes acquired for the collection. The material is shelved throughout the Doherty Library collection.
In 1997, the L. Tuffly Ellis Collection Endowed Fund was established to support the “Ellis Collection of Texas, the South and the Southwest” in the Doherty Library at the University of St. Thomas. This collection contains more than 1,500 titles and is housed in the basement level of the Doherty Library.
Established in the 1970’s, the Greenwood Endowment supports the acquisition of material in children’s literature and other materials in the general areas of education and human development related to the curricula offered by the School of Education. The Greenwood Children’s Literature Collection is located in the children’s literature section of the main collection of the Doherty Library. Other material that is not children’s literature is shelved throughout the library collection.
UST students, staff, faculty, alumniand ELS students must have either current UST ID or current ELS ID to be allowed access to the Doherty Library.
Visitors who are residents of Texas without a university or college ID are required to have 2 forms of ID; a current TexShare or Friends of Doherty Library card and one of the following:
A government issued photo ID (State ID, Passport, or military ID)
Current teacher ID
Visitors from other universities or colleges are required to have two forms of ID; their current University or College ID and one of the following:
A government issued photo ID (State ID, Passport, or military ID)
Current TexShare card

Current work ID (example: Oil Company ID such as Shell, Exxon, etc... or medical center ID)
Non-Texas residentswithout a current university or college ID are required to purchase a Friends of the Library Card (see tab on this page for more details).

Current – this means they must have dates on them to prove that they are not expired
Valid – only the kinds of ID’s listed above are considered valid forms of ID for entry to the library
Photo – they must have a photo of the person presenting the ID.
Guest scholars (visiting professors, etc.) and school groups are welcome and are asked to email the Dean of Libraries about scheduling a visit.
Guest scholars will need a letter from a UST faculty member/administrator or their home institution that asks us to grant access to a guest. The letter needs to state what the specific research will be and how long the guest needs to use the library. An e-mail is sufficient, but a letter is preferred.
Family members related to UST students can be admitted to the Doherty Library whenever they are accompanied by the UST student, faculty or staff member. Family members not accompanied by the related UST student will be required to present two of the criteria listed above.

Doherty Library
In 1954, students at the University of St. Thomas demonstrated their support for the University library by forming a human chain to move the collection from its first home in the Link-Lee Mansion to Murphy Hall.
Today, the collection is housed in the Robert Pace and Ada Mary Doherty Library on the University academic mall, symbolizing the Library’s continuing centrality to the intellectual life of the University. With more than 250,000 books, access to approximately 50,000 periodical titles, and access to a variety of electronic databases, Doherty Library is a major learning resource for students, faculty and the Houston community.
As the University of St. Thomas continues to meet the challenges of the 21st century, the Library must expand to serve the needs of an increasingly complex society.
By becoming a member of The Friends of Doherty Library, you can play a key role in the Library's growth and development. The Friends of Doherty Library make a commitment to strengthen the Library through the giving of time, financial and in-kind support, and the maintenance of the Library as a forum for a shared interest in the world of letters.
Resources at the Doherty Library are primarily intended for scholarly use.
Creating a disturbance of any kind, (including, but not limited to, loud noise, loud talking, harassment or abusive behavior toward other patrons or library staff, vandalism, carrying a weapon, smoking, inappropriate behavior, viewing pornography or sexually explicit material, inadequate personal hygiene, soliciting, unauthorized petitions or surveys, unauthorized entry to private or closed areas, unauthorized recordings, etc.) are not allowed and will result, at minimum, in your removal from the library.
For serious or repeated violation of the general use policy, you will be banned from future use of the library.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The Doherty Library will follow ADA requirements for automatic door entrances, aisle width, suitably wide doors, restroom requirements, door handles and other ADA requirements as needed in an academic library. Specialized software and workstations will be installed at the library for the visually impaired and other ADA-related conditions as required by law.
Computer Use Policy
The library computers are primarily intended for scholarly use only.
Viewing pornography and sexually explicit materials is prohibited for all users. Failure to abide by this policy will result in your removal from the library and may result in being banned from the library.
The library computers are not intended for non-scholarly uses such as computer games, music videos, and excessive e-mail and chat and you may be asked to cease these activities. Refusal to abide by this policy may result in your removal from the library, and will result in the intervention of UST Police as appropriate.
The computers in the library basement computer lab are restricted to University of St. Thomas students, faculty and staff use only.
Children in the Library
Anyone under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times while using the Doherty Library. Children cannot be monitored and supervised by the staff; therefore the safety of unattended children cannot be guaranteed. UST Police will be called to resolve incidents involving unsupervised children under age 14.
Cell Phone Usage in the Library
Cell phone use is permitted in the Library; however, please be respectful of your fellow library users by following these guidelines:
Set your phone to silent or vibrate.
If you must answer or make a call, please speak in a low voice and, if the call will last for more than a few minutes, exit the building.
Designated “Silent Areas” are found in the Silent Reading Room, located on the first floor, east-wing; and also the first floor west-wing book stack area. Cell phones should not be used in these areas.
Special Accommodations
Here at Doherty library we respect each individual patron as our guest and if you have a need for a special accommodation or have a special circumstance that you would like us to be aware of please contact a librarian at the reference desk or a circulation desk manager. If your request does not infringe on anyone else’s library use we will try to accommodate your request.

Additional Policies
No self-propelled or electronic vehicles are allowed to be stored in the library foyer, or anywhere inside the library. Patrons are encouraged to use the bicycle rack located outside the front of the library to store these vehicles.
No animals or pets are allowed in the library with an exception for patrons requiring assistance of a service animal.
Limited food and beverages for individual use are permitted. Food and beverages for large groups are not permitted. Exceptions may be made by the library staff in advance.
Furniture, such as arm chairs, study desks, tables, easels, whiteboards, etc. may not be moved from their positions so that they block walkways, doorways, emergency exits, fire alarms, or anywhere that will disrupt library patrons and processes.
Memorial and Gift Book Program for the Doherty Library
Here is your opportunity to make a lasting gift or memorial. You can support the academic needs of the University for decades to come. Your decision to sponsor the cost of a book for the Doherty Library is a lasting, useful and very affordable donation. It will be appreciated for its thoughtfulness by both the person receiving the gift and by our library patrons. What is the cost of your generosity? A book sponsorship will cost $ 50 per hardcover book. A specific book title can be requested, but the cost to obtain a specific book will be determined on a title-by-title basis.
A sponsorship costs $ 50 per book if the library selects the book. The library will notify both the sponsor and the person receiving the gift when the sponsored book is added to the library collection. Simply mail your payment along with the sponsorship form to the Doherty Library.
If you would prefer to select a specific book for sponsorship, mail this form to the Doherty Library without payment and someone from the library will contact you about the cost. Keep in mind that only books that support the UST curriculum are acceptable.
The TexShare library card enables current UST students, faculty, and staff to borrow books from the University of Houston, Houston Baptist University, and other participating Texas libraries (Rice University does not accept the TexShare Card).
You may obtain a new Texshare Card at the start of the academic year at the Doherty Library’s Circulation Desk or through the online TexShare form. You must return your books to the library from which you borrowed them. If they are late, the lending library may charge you overdue fees.
Non-UST Patrons
Non-UST patrons can obtain a TexShare card through their participating public library or through their affiliation with a participating Texas university/college.

Library Mission Statement

The Dr. Lee Williames & David Theis Collection was donated by David Theis to honor his mentor, Williames, for his work with students. The collection is composed of resources that mainly support the Russian Studies program as well as other disciplines in the Liberal Arts.
The John O. Whitney - Readex Archive of Americana Collection
Provides access to one of the world's largest electronic collections of primary documents covering American history. The collection is a gift from NewsBank, inc. in honor of John Whitney, a UST professor who has served on NewsBank’s Board for more than 25 years. The acclaimed Archive of Americana enables students and scholars to explore virtually every aspect of United States history, culture and daily life across several centuries spanning from about 1500-1900s. It provides unprecedented online access to newspapers, books, broadsides, ephemera, government publications and more.
Janice Gordon-Kelter Collection
Established in 2006 through the donation of the personal library of the late Dr. Janice Gordon-Kelter, former Dean of the Master in Liberal Arts Program at UST, this collection is dedicated primarily to Women in Culture and Society, Medieval Studies and British History. This collection is shelved throughout the library.
McFadden-Moran Collection for Irish Studies Research
University of St. Thomas board member Mr. Patrick J. Moran and the Moran family have donated a sizable collection of Irish primary source materials and historical newspapers to Doherty Library. President Emeritus and History professor Dr. Joseph McFadden lent his expertise in selecting the materials for the donation. The McFadden-Moran Collection presents a record of Irish politics, history and culture, primarily from the 19th- and early 20th- centuries. The microform collection includes three major sources for the study of Irish history and culture available today. British in Ireland: Dublin Castle Record, Ireland: Politics and Society through the Press, 1760-1922 and the Galway Resource for Anglo-Irish Literature (GRAIL).
The 136-reels of microfilm in the British in Ireland: Dublin Castle Records set reproduce the original files collected by British administrators in Dublin Castle between 1881 and 1921. During these years, the British in Ireland faced increasing Irish nationalism, the rise of anti-government organizations, the "Land Wars," and the struggle over Home Rule. The set includes Royal Irish Constabulary records and police reports, judicial proceedings, and even surveillance information on more than 400 Sinn Fien and Republican suspects pursued between 1889 and 1921.
Local and nationalist Irish newspapers are reproduced in Ireland: Politics and Society through the Press, 1760-1922. The McFadden-Moran Collection holdings include 19th century runs of the Irishman (Dublin), United Ireland, the Limerick Reporter and Tipperary Vindicator, Galway Vindicator, and the Clare Journal and Ennis Advertiser.
The Galway Resource for Anglo-Irish Literature (GRAIL), developed by the University College Galway and the National Library of Ireland, reproduces over 500 works by 80 Anglo-Irish 19th century writers. The collection is a treasure of 19th century popular fiction, drama, poetry, and even folksongs. Read"Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland" written by Thomas Crofton Croker in 1825-28, for example. Or Irish poet Thomas Moore's "Letter to the Roman Catholics of Dublin" (1810 ) along with his later book "Travels of an Irish Gentleman in Search of a Religion: With Notes and Illustrations" (1833).
The McFadden-Moran Collection is located in the Silent Reading Room at Doherty Library. Printing is available and free of charge.
The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Collection
The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Collection is made possible through a generous donation of the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation. The collection contains books and other resources which foster a deeper understanding of Judaism and promote interfaith relations.

The Library Computer Lab rules are designed to ensure legal, ethical, efficient and non-disruptive use of the Computer Center's and the University's computing resources.
ALL users must observe the following rules:
No food, no drink, and no smoking!
Please follow all posted instructions and notices, as well as any instructions given by the Lab Assistant on duty.
Users of the Library Computer Lab may be asked at any time to show a valid UST ID. Those without such identification will be denied access.
Save work periodically. We are not responsible for any lost work.
Students doing course work have priority in using the computers. Other users may be asked to yield access to the computers when the lab is near capacity.
Do not change any desktop settings or program configurations. Customizing a computer for your personal use makes it more difficult for others to use it efficiently.
Do not install any software on these computers yourself.
Use only software already installed on the computers, or authorized course-specific software run from a diskette.
Always use a flash drive or recordable CD to store your files, and take the disk with you when you leave. Files on the hard drive may be deleted at any time, and you may be held liable for academic dishonesty if others copy your course work (even without your knowledge). The T-drive may also be used for temporary storage; again, note the warning concerning academic dishonesty.
All users shall obey the University's Computing Policy, and those users accessing network resources are expected to conform to general standards of "network etiquette." Complaints from users of either the local UST network or the Internet at large will be fully investigated.
Users who are seen accessing adult web sites will be asked to leave immediately.
Software piracy is a federal crime. Many of the software packages installed on these computers are licensed for use only within the Library Computer Lab. Do not copy the software installed on these computers for use elsewhere, and do not use software brought in from outside on these computers.
Do not unplug existing workstation network cables to use with laptops.
Violators of these rules may be referred to University administration for disciplinary action, and may also face civil and/or criminal charges.
Jim Piccininni
Dean of the Doherty Library and Beran Library
James Piccininni is the Dean of Libraries, providing leadership for the Doherty Library at the University of St. Thomas’ main campus and the Beran Library at St. Mary’s Seminary. He has over 35 years of experience working in libraries, including serving as Dean of Libraries and previously as the Director of Doherty Library at UST.
James has a broad range of library experience, having worked at two SUNY campus libraries that required involvement in virtually every aspect of academic libraries: reference, instruction, cataloging, collection development, circulation and library automation. He has served on the Texas Council of Academic Libraries executive board and is a member of the Texas Library Association, American Library Association and the Catholic Library Association. He is an active reviewer for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges, the regional accrediting agency for universities in the southeastern United States.
James received his MA in Public Administration from Marist College, and his MA in Library Science and BA in Political Science from State University of New York.
All current students, faculty, and staff have access to Doherty Library databases from off-campus.
To login, enter your Celt Login ID and Password.
Your Celt Login ID is the first part of your St. Thomas email address. Password should have at least 8 characters in length, one upper case, one lower case, one number (0-9) or special character* (~, !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *, (, ), -, =, +, ?, [, ],{, }).
Celt Login password can be reset online through https://clas.stthom.edu/clas/reset.pl. You must have your St. Thomas ID number in order to reset your password. This number is located on your St. Thomas ID card.
If you have trouble with the Library of Latin Texts database, try clearing out old cookies and changing settings to check for newer versions of stored pages with every visit to the page. In Internet Explorer, these options are under Tools—Internet Options—General Tab—Temporary Internet Files—Delete Cookies. Use the Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files section to locate options for checking for newer versions of stored pages.
Firewall and security software may prevent access. If you get a message that the connection has been refused, or you see a “Page Not Found” error, this is the likely explanation. In the workplace, consult with your employer’s I.T. department to see if the firewall or security software can be set to allow access to our proxy server. At home, try temporarily disabling security software such as Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, Symantec Desktop Firewall, and the like. If you gain access to the databases when the security is turned off, you have found the problem. Adjust your security settings to allow access to the proxy server and turn your security back on. For questions, contact the technical support group for your specific security product.
You need to enable Java and JavaScript. In Internet Explorer 6.0, this option is under Tools—Internet Options—Advanced. Scroll down and check off the Java (Sun) box. In Netscape 6.2, go to Edit—Preferences—Advanced. Check the boxes to enable Java and JavaScript.
Delete any old cookies and start fresh. In Internet Explorer 6.0, you can delete cookies under Tools—Internet Options. In Netscape 6.2, go to Tasks—Privacy & Security—Cookie Manager—View Stored Cookies. Delete cookies as appropriate or choose Remove All Cookies.
Cookies must be enabled. In Internet Explorer 6.0, this option is under Tools—Internet Options—Privacy—accept all cookies. In Netscape 6.2, choose Edit—Preferences—Privacy & Security—accept all cookies.
Internet Explorer and Netscape are the most widely supported browsers. Other browsers may not work equally as well. When in doubt, use Internet Explorer.
Turn off any ISP accelerators, if you are having trouble loading the initial page of a database.
