Students who enter UST as freshmen may apply through UST main application and select nursing as their major. Upon successful completion of nursing pre-requisites at UST, candidates may start the nursing coursework in the fall semester of the sophomore year. Students interested in applying to the ABSN program can do so at any time, as applications are reviewed as they’re received. Applicants to the ABSN program have the option to start three times per year — January, May or August.
- What pre-requisites do I need to apply to your program?
You’ll need to complete Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Microbiology (Lab recommended, not required), Algebra or Statistics (within last 5 years) before applying. Science courses must be complete to be eligible to be reviewed for admission. If you have pending a non-science course, you can still be reviewed for admission. It is at the discretion of the PSON Admissions Committee to review applicants with incomplete coursework. To qualify for enrollment in our ABSN program, in addition to these prerequisites you must also have a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. - I have all of my pre-requisites. How long will it take me to graduate?
Our traditional BSN program is a minimum of 3 years of nursing coursework. Our class schedule is set at this pace to help our students be successful in our program. View the Freshmen Degree Plan. Students with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree who have completed all ABSN prerequisites can complete our second-degree ABSN program in 12 months. Check for ABSN prerequisites.
- Where do your students work after graduation?
Our students are offered jobs (generally upon successful completion of the NCLEX exam) at a variety of area hospitals, including Harris Health System, Memorial Hermann, MD Anderson, St. Luke’s Houston Methodist, Christus Health, Clear Lake Regional, and Texas Children’s.
- What should I do to ensure my admission to your program?
Our Nursing Admissions Committee admits a very diverse group of students each year. A number of different factors are considered, including (but not limited to) overall GPA, nursing pre-requisite grades, HESI A2 or TEAS scores, patterns of repeats and/or withdraws, and the required essay. While a strong GPA (both cumulative and in nursing biology pre-requisites) makes you an attractive candidate, this is not the only consideration for admission. Given the high number of applications each year, sometimes even well-qualified students may not be offered admission to our program.
- Do you require an entrance exam?
Yes, we require official HESI A2 or TEAS scores to be submitted by the application deadline for admission to our traditional BSN program. For the HESI A2, we have a minimum requirement of 80% on all five main sections: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, Math, and Anatomy and Physiology. For the TEAS, we have a minimum requirement of 78% in each section. Meeting this minimum requirement score does not guarantee admission. For the ABSN program, you must take all five component tests of the HESI A2 exam — Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Math and Anatomy and Physiology — and pass with a score of 80% or higher on each section. You can also take the TEAS with a 78% passing score on each section.
- I read that you have a “holistic” curriculum. What does that mean?
Building on the mission of the University of St. Thomas and its Founders, the Basilian Fathers, and nourished by the historic traditions of Catholic nursing education and service, the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing will educate nurses intellectually, morally, and spiritually in the art and science of nursing as a compassionate healing ministry. This focus is found throughout our nursing classes as well as UST’s theology and philosophy classes required in our core curriculum. You will have the academic foundation coupled with the state of the art technology in your simulation labs to prepare you to take the NCLEX as well as be a well-rounded professional nurse.
- When will I find out if I have been admitted to the program?
For the Traditional BSN program, the Nursing Admissions Committee meets to review Verified applicants following each deadline. Students usually receive their official decision letter within 2 weeks of each deadline. For the Accelerated BSN program, we are reviewing Verified applicants every week. Work closely with your ABSN Admissions Advisor to better understand the timeline for a decision.
